“ The best part is that I don't have to remember to go looking for grades, when new grades are available, an email says so. All I have to do is log on and type in my screen name and password. Then I am either pleasantly surprised or rather annoyed.”

IVCHS puts grades online

Chillicothe Times - October 18, 2006

These days, students at Illinois Valley Central High School cannot get away with anything.

Parents no longer need to be surprised when report cards come out.

Beginning this fall, IVC subscribed to Edline, a Web hosting service that allows students and parents to access a detailed listing of all grades on line. Feedback from parents who have signed up for the service has been extremely positive.

Last year, IVC used software from School Data Systems called School Connect.

The program was cumbersome to use and only displayed the overall grade in a subject, with no indication of when the information was last updated or what grades were included in the average.

With the old system, teachers forwarded information to IVC assistant principal Robert Howell who, in turn, forwarded information to a service in Lisle for posting on the Web. The lag time was considerable.

With Edline, teachers enter grades in the GradeQuick computer software program and can immediately log onto Edline and upload the file of grades.

Students and parents can provide their e-mail address when activating their accounts so that they are notified each time a new grade is added.

The program shows the student’s score, maximum number of points and class mean for every homework assignment, quiz or test given. The days absent or tardy, as well as grade, numerical average and rank in the class, are also shown.

Access to grades is not the only positive feature offered by Edline.

Teachers may also be e-mailed directly through the site, so it can be used as a tool to answer questions and promote better communication between parents and teachers.

Also available are course descriptions and a syllabus or outline for each course.

German teacher Dan Stoyak was familiar with the program, since his wife had been using it at her school for several years.

He jumped right into the creation of his Web pages, including detailed information about the German department and class activities.

As teachers become more comfortable using the program, daily assignments and other information will become more readily available.

The program can also be used to e-mail groups about upcoming events.

Choral director Kami Griesbaum has set up a group mailing for students in Madrigals to update them on changes in rehearsal schedules and other activities.

The list of all classes offered by IVC and class descriptions can also be accessed through the site.

At registration, students and parents were each given activation codes and guidelines, which outlined how to go to the Web site www.edline.net and create an account.

Both students and parents establish their own screen names and passwords, so the site is secure and the information can only be accessed by them.

At this time, just over 50 percent of the students and only 38 percent of parents are utilizing Edline.

Howell, the Edline administrator, encourages parents to call him. He said he is happy to provide activitation codes and walk people through the process.

Parents do not have to be a computer whiz to use Edline as it is easy and user friendly, Howell explained. Staff will also be on hand to help parents get signed up for Edline, at parent/teacher conferences Thursday and Friday.

Additionally, Howell said he realizes that not all homes have computers.

Families who do not have a computer can still open an account and access student grades from computers at work or at the Chillicothe Public Library. Students also have the opportunity to access Edline from computers in the school’s library or computer labs.

The bottom line is that the most important person in a child’s education is the parent, school officials stress.

Edline provides parents with more information, which, in turn, gives more opportunities to be involved.

The high school is serving as the pilot program for Edline this year.

District officials intend to introduce Edline to the middle school by next year.

Although the Edline Web site provides high school students with comprehensive information about their classes, IVC School District 321 still uses the Web site www.ivcschools.com to post most news, including school information, the schedule of upcoming activities and school lunches.
